A Christmas market with palm trees, yachts and the smell of the sea: the Fira de Nadal at Port Vell is Barcelona’s most photogenic winter fair. On the Moll de la Fusta, between the Columbus monument and the marina, you’ll find a giant Ferris wheel, food stalls, craft and gift stands, a huge Christmas tree and nightly light shows over the water. It opens later than the other Christmas markets in Barcelona and is the only one that stays open until Three Kings.

What to expect at the Port Vell Christmas market

Unlike the traditional Fira de Santa Llúcia, the Port Vell market is about atmosphere and food rather than nativity figures. Wooden chalets sell hot chocolate, churros, mulled wine, crêpes, cheese and cured meats, while artisans offer jewellery, ceramics and Christmas decorations. The illuminated Ferris wheel is the star attraction, with views over the harbour, the old town and Montjuïc. A programme of concerts, workshops, storytelling for children and a light-and-sound show turns the quay into an evening destination.

Everything sits on the Port Vell promenade, a few minutes’ walk from La Rambla, the Maremagnum shopping centre and the Barceloneta beach, so it is easy to combine with a stroll along the waterfront.

The market opens at the end of November and runs through the whole festive season, including 25 December, 1 January and Three Kings. It is open daily from around 10:00 to 21:00, with longer hours – until 22:00 – on Saturdays and public holidays. Entry to the market is free; the Ferris wheel and some activities charge a small fee.

How to get there

The market is on Moll de la Fusta, next to Plaça del Portal de la Pau at the bottom of La Rambla. Take metro line L3 to Drassanes (two minutes’ walk) or L4 to Barceloneta; buses V13, V15, D20 and the Christmas Bus Tour stop nearby. Combine it with the rest of the season

Come in the late afternoon: watch the sunset over the harbour from the Ferris wheel, eat at the stalls and stay for the light show. On 5 January the Three Kings arrive by boat right here at Moll de la Fusta before their parade through the city, and on New Year’s Eve the quay is a good place for a walk before or after the fireworks at Plaça d’Espanya.
