The Fira de Santa Llúcia is where Christmas in Barcelona begins. Held since 1786 on the square in front of the Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter, it is the oldest and largest of the Christmas markets in Barcelona: almost 300 stalls selling nativity figures, Christmas trees, crafts and the two Catalan characters every visitor wants to take home, the caganer and the Tió de Nadal. It opens in the second half of November, when the city’s Christmas lights are switched on, and is the traditional opening act of Winter Festival Barcelona.

A market with 240 years of history

The fair takes its name from Saint Lucy, whose feast day on 13 December was originally the only day it was held. Over two centuries it grew into a month-long market that fills the Avinguda de la Catedral, Plaça Nova and the surrounding streets. It is a market for locals as much as for tourists: this is where Barcelona families buy the figures for their pessebre, the nativity scene, and the greenery to decorate it. On 13 December the fair celebrates its patron saint with music, giants and traditional dancing.

The four sections of the fair

The stalls are grouped by trade. The nativity and figure section is the largest, with hand-painted figures from a few euros to collector’s pieces, complete scenes, and the caganer in every imaginable version – from the traditional peasant to this year’s footballers and politicians. The greenery section sells Christmas trees, moss, cork bark, mistletoe and poinsettias. The crafts section has ceramics, jewellery, candles and decorations, and the small simbombes section sells traditional Catalan instruments, drums and tambourines for singing carols. Everywhere you’ll find the Tió de Nadal, the log with a painted face that children “feed” in December and beat with sticks on Christmas Eve until it delivers presents. Dates and opening hours 2026

The fair runs from around 20 November until 23 December, the last day before Catalan families set up their nativity scenes. It is open every day, usually from 10:00 to 21:00, with longer hours on the last weekends before Christmas. Entry is free. Weekday mornings are the quietest time; on December weekends the Avinguda de la Catedral is packed.

How to get there and what to combine it with

The market sits in front of the Cathedral, a five-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya: metro Jaume I (L4) or Liceu (L3), or Urquinaona (L1, L4). The Christmas Bus Tour stops nearby. What is a caganer?

Is the market open on Christmas Day?

No. The Fira de Santa Llúcia closes on 23 December. For the Christmas week and New Year, visit the Port Vell market, which is open until 6 January.
