Few Christmas markets have a backdrop like this one. The Fira de Nadal at the Sagrada Família sets up its wooden stalls on Plaça de la Sagrada Família, right beside the Nativity façade of Gaudí’s basilica, and sells everything a Catalan family needs for Christmas: nativity figures, Christmas trees, the caganer and the Tió de Nadal. It is the quieter, more local sister of the Fira de Santa Llúcia and one of the highlights of Winter Festival Barcelona for anyone visiting the basilica in December.

What you’ll find at the market

Around a hundred stalls line the square in the district of the same name, a market that has been held here since the 1960s. The offer is traditional: hand-painted nativity figures and complete pessebres, moss, cork and bark for building the scene, the cheeky caganer in hundreds of versions, Christmas trees, poinsettias and mistletoe, and handmade decorations, candles and ceramics. Food stalls sell turrón, neules and hot chocolate. There is less of a crowd than at the Cathedral, which makes it a better place to browse with children.

Look for the caganers of footballers, politicians and celebrities – the new figures of the year are a Catalan news item every December – and for the Tió, the smiling log that “poops” presents on Christmas Eve. Our guide to Catalan Christmas traditions explains what all of these are for.

Dates and opening hours 2026

The market runs from the last weekend of November until 23 December, the day before Christmas Eve, when Catalan families set up their nativity scenes. It is open every day from about 10:00 to 21:00, with slightly shorter hours on the first days. Entry is free.

How to get there

Plaça de la Sagrada Família is directly at metro stop Sagrada Família (lines L2 and L5); buses 19, 33, 34, 50, 51 and H10 and the Christmas Bus Tour stop nearby. From Passeig de Gràcia it is a 20-minute walk through the Eixample. Coming from the Fira de Santa Llúcia, take L4 from Jaume I to Verdaguer and change to L5, about 15 minutes. See our metro guide.

Combine it with the Sagrada Família

The obvious plan is to pair the market with a visit to the Sagrada Família itself. In winter the basilica closes at 18:00, so book a morning or early-afternoon slot, then wander the market at dusk when the stalls and the façade are lit. Tickets are timed and sell out over the Christmas weeks – reserve in advance. The Casa Batlló Winter Night and Passeig de Gràcia lights are a ten-minute metro ride away for the evening.

Is the Sagrada Família Christmas market free?

Yes, the market on the square is free to visit. Entry to the basilica itself requires a timed ticket.

How does it differ from the Fira de Santa Llúcia?

Both sell nativity figures, trees and crafts. Santa Llúcia is older, larger and busier, in front of the Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter; the Sagrada Família market is calmer, more local and has Gaudí’s basilica as a backdrop.

Is it open on Christmas Day?

No. The market closes on 23 December. The Port Vell Christmas market stays open until 6 January.
