Winter Festival Barcelona Walk: two self-guided routes past the Christmas lights, markets and Gaudí

The best way to experience Winter Festival Barcelona is on foot. The city centre is compact, the winter weather is mild and the Christmas lights, markets and light shows are all within a few kilometres of each other. We’ve put the highlights into two self-guided walks: an afternoon-into-evening route through the old town down to the harbour, and an evening route along Passeig de Gràcia to the Sagrada Família for the Gaudí façades and the lights. Follow them on our Winter Festival Barcelona map.

Route 1: Old town and harbour (4 km, 3–4 hours)

Start at Plaça de Catalunya in the late afternoon, when the square’s Christmas decorations and the department-store façades are lit. Walk down Portal de l’Àngel, the busiest shopping street in Spain, under its canopy of lights, to the Cathedral and the Fira de Santa Llúcia, Barcelona’s oldest Christmas market. Give yourself an hour for the stalls and, if it is open, the Cathedral cloister with its thirteen geese.

From the Cathedral cross Plaça Sant Jaume, where the city hall sets up a giant nativity scene each year, and continue into El Born: Carrer de Montcada, the Picasso Museum and the basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, whose square hosts a small crafts market in December. Follow Passeig del Born and Carrer del Rec down to the harbour and finish at the Christmas market at Port Vell: ride the Ferris wheel for the view over the old town, eat at the food stalls and stay for the light show over the water.

Stop What to see Time
Plaça de Catalunya Christmas decorations, start of the lights 15 min
Portal de l’Àngel Illuminated shopping street 15 min
Cathedral & Fira de Santa Llúcia Christmas market since 1786, cloister 60 min
Plaça Sant Jaume Giant nativity scene 10 min
El Born & Santa Maria del Mar Boutiques, crafts market, basilica 45 min
Port Vell Christmas market, Ferris wheel, light show 60 min

Route 2: Gaudí and the lights (3 km, 2–3 hours)

This route is best after dark, from around 18:00. Begin again at Plaça de Catalunya and walk up Passeig de Gràcia, the city’s grandest boulevard and the place where the official Christmas lights are switched on each November. Stop at Casa Batlló – in December the façade hosts a Christmas light show every evening, and the Winter Night visit takes you inside after dark – and two blocks up at La Pedrera, Gaudí’s other masterpiece with its rooftop of chimney warriors.

Turn right along Carrer de Provença or Carrer de Mallorca and walk twenty minutes through the Eixample grid to the Sagrada Família. Until 23 December the Fira de Nadal fills the square in front of the Nativity façade with nativity figures and Christmas trees; the illuminated towers are the perfect end to the walk. Metro line L2 or L5 takes you back to the centre.

Stop What to see Time
Passeig de Gràcia The city’s main Christmas lights 20 min
Casa Batlló Façade light show, Winter Night visit 20–60 min
La Pedrera Gaudí façade and rooftop 15–60 min
Sagrada Família Illuminated basilica, Fira de Nadal 45 min

Add-ons: Sant Pau, ice rinks and the Christmas bus

With time to spare, extend Route 2 by ten minutes along Avinguda de Gaudí to the Els Llums de Sant Pau light festival in the Art Nouveau hospital, one of the most atmospheric winter evenings in the city (timed tickets). Fancy a break from walking? Temporary ice rinks pop up around the centre each winter, and the Christmas Bus Tour covers the illuminated avenues without the footwork.

Practical tips for walking in winter

Barcelona in December has daytime temperatures of 10–16 °C and sunset around 17:20, so the lights come on early and you can do both routes in one long day. Wear comfortable shoes – the Gothic Quarter is cobbled – and bring a light jacket for the evening. Weekends in December are busy around the Cathedral and Passeig de Gràcia; weekday afternoons are calmer. Check our weather and sunset guide and, for getting back to your hotel, the metro guide.

Tickets for the stops along the way

Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, the Sagrada Família and Els Llums de Sant Pau all use timed tickets and sell out in December. Book your Barcelona tickets in advance or combine the Gaudí stops with the Barcelona Pass. Current offers:

Hotels along the routes

Stay around Plaça de Catalunya, the Gothic Quarter or the lower Eixample and both walks start at your doorstep. Our guide to hotels during Winter Festival Barcelona compares the neighbourhoods. Check availability on the map:

Frequently asked questions

Can I do both walks in one day?

Yes. Do Route 1 from about 15:00 to 19:00, take the metro from Barceloneta or Drassanes back to Plaça de Catalunya, and walk Route 2 from 19:30. Expect around 7 kilometres in total.

Are the walks suitable for children and pushchairs?

Route 2 is flat and wide. Route 1 crosses the cobbled Gothic Quarter and gets crowded at the markets on weekends, so it is easier with a pushchair on weekday afternoons.

When are the Christmas lights on?

From the official switch-on in the second half of November until 6 January, every day from dusk (around 17:30) until at least 23:00, later on weekends.

Two evenings, two faces of the city: the medieval lanes and harbour lights of the old town, and the Modernista façades and Christmas illuminations of the Eixample. Walk them both and you’ll have seen the best of Winter Festival Barcelona without a single queue.
